Quotes on…

 …Writers & Writing:

  • Every author in some way portrays himself in his works, even if it be against his will. ~ Goethe
  • The writer writes in order to teach himself, to understand himself, to satisfy himself; the publishing of his ideas, though it brings gratification, is a curious anticlimax.  ~ Alfred Kazin
  • Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self. ~ Cyril Connolly
  • What things there are to write, if one could only write them!  My mind is full of gleaming thought; gay moods and mysterious, moth-like meditations hover in my imagination, fanning their painted wings. But always the rarest, those streaked with azure and the deepest crimson, flutter away beyond my reach. ~ Logan Pearsall Smith
  • There are thousands of thoughts lying within a man that he does not know till he takes up the pen and writes. ~ William Makepeace Thackeray
  • The two most engaging powers of an author are to make new things familiar and familiar things new. ~ Samuel Johnson
  • The skill of writing is to create a context in which other people can think. ~ Edwin Schlossberg
  • Good writing takes more than just time; it wants your best moments and the best of you. ~ Real Live Preacher
  • Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring two pence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it. ~ C. S. Lewis
  • The man who writes about himself and his own time is the only man who writes about all people and all time. ~ George Bernard Shaw
  • The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say. ~ Anaïs Nin
  • Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass. ~ Anton Chekhov
  • The story I am writing exists, written in absolutely perfect fashion, some place, in the air.  All I must do is find it, and copy it.  ~ Jules Renard
  • Words - so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them. ~ Nathaniel Hawthorne
  • Words are but the vague shadows of the volumes we mean.  Little audible links, they are, chaining together great inaudible feelings and purposes.  ~ Theodore Dreiser
  • Writing is both mask and unveiling. ~ E.B. White

Why is all this here, you wonder?

For one, I love quotes (more on that in another post...Something I'd mentioned in my very first post too, I know. Will write about it some day!).

Two, because I relate to these a lot.

Three....well, there is no three. Do I need to have so many reasons to post what I like on my page?! :-P
